Valkyrie Profile Patch From 101

I hacked my Vita a few months ago just to play this game and might have found the reason for it not being available. There are game breaking bugs when running the game on Vita. On Arkdain Ruins (Chapter 5) the game crashes when you try to open the first door, there is another dungeon later with a similar problem.I loaded the same umd image and savefile into PPSSPP and it ran fine, thus I believe it's Vita's internal PSP emulator problem.Maybe Square Enix stumbled upon the same bug, though the game wasn't worth all the work to patch it and gave up.

Ah wait, ilpalazzo, you're thinking of 'Valkyrie Drive' I think.Easy mistake to make with the similar names.Valkyrie Profile was a classic RPG for the PS1, which had some very strange and unique mechanics (I guess a bit like Vagrant Story - the games were totally different, but each of them is very unique for a JRPG).Valkyrie Profile cast the player as the Valkyrie, Lenneth, in a story related to Viking mythology. At the beginning of the game, you're told the world is going to end in the final Viking apocalypse (called Ragnarok) on a specific date, and you need to go down to earth to recruit warriors who will fight for Asgard in the coming end times. In the game, you moved around the world map by flying like an angel, and in-game your character was invisible to mortal people. The whole game took place on a calendar (so every movement took time, meaning you could miss events etc.

If you didn't explore) and the game would always end after the duration, meaning you got an ending (one of several) and had to start over. The dungeons in the game were like side-on platforming sections, and the combat used a mix of real-time and turn based stuff - the combat was a bit like Project X Zone, or that new indie RPG Indivisible (the devs have said that VP was one of their inspirations). To get the good ending, you had to 'recruit' people. This meant that as the Valkyrie, you had to approach them at the moment of death (usually in a cutscene) and save their soul. They would then travel with you as party members, and you would level them up/train them. Eventually you would 'let go' of these members and let them ascend to Asgard to fight in the heavenly war, and you would have to look for new party members on Earth. If all this sounds super-complex, it's because it WAS very strange. Nothing about it was 'normal' by JRPG terms.

Every system, every mechanic tried to innovate in some way; some of them well, some of them poorly, but it created a really interesting game that you had to play quite a lot to fully grasp. If you ever get to play it, I recommend it - though I don't know if the sequels etc. Were as good as the first.
